Frequently Asked Questions About Our Products

Speakers

Active Speakers

My speaker is not powering up, the light is not coming on

Sometimes it may just be something as simple as a blown fuse. You can check this easily by removing it from the speaker (Usually found behind a small plastic compartment near the power input) and look for any signs of a blown fuse.

I'm trying to connect my device to the speaker but it sounds terrible

Check if the speaker has a line/mic switch, if selected to mic and connecting an audio device it will sound bad

I cant connect my passive speaker to the speaker

don't get a line output confused with a speaker output, unless it specifies speaker out a line output is only to connect to another active speaker

One speaker is better quality than the other

This could be a result of using unbalanced signals coming from your input device. When using unbalanced signals and cables this can dramatically reduce the sound levels from one speaker. To test you can swap the speakers around to see i the problem shifts with the speaker, and to fix the issue permanantly you need to use a mixer with balanced outputs.

USB/Bluetooth player not working/powered up on the pack of speaker (Vonyx & skytec)

Press and hold the mode button to switch the usb/bluetooth player on and off

Why does it sound like it is farting or I can only hear the tinny sound with no bass?

A speaker will start to sound like this when the bass driver has been pushed to hard and is either on its way to being blown or has already been blown.

One speaker is louder than the other

this can happen when the mixer your using doesn't have balanced outputs. The speakers themselves can be swapped over to check if this is the issue because it's highly likely both speakers work fine. Swap both speakers first, then if it persists swap the cables around. If the problem switches between the speakers you will either need a new cable or a new mixer with balanced outputs, or you will have to manually adjust the volume on the speaker to compensate.

Why have I been sent 400w speakers when the advert states 1600w

Speakers have three ratings RMS Max and peak, most adverts will advertisements the peak rating hence 1600w however the true power is 400w as RMS is the key rating, peak power is when bass tones hit causing the speaker to peak so although relevant it is not the continuous power rating which is what RMS stands for

Music plays ok, as soon as the mic is used, the sound goes quiet, then back up when mic not in use

Press the repeat knob to activated or deactivated the microphone priority.

When activated you will hear; ‘microphone priority closed’ or  ‘microphone priority open’

Passive Speakers

I've no sound coming from my speakers

Firstly check that the amplifier is on and that the speakers are correctly connected, then check the device which you have connected to the amplifier is connected correctly and playing music, increase the volume on both the amplifier and device you should then see led indicators increasing on the amplifier and volume from the speakers, if there is no lights on the amplifier it could point towards the amplifier not working rather than the speakers so try and check with another amplifier if available. Failing that the speakers may well be faulty and need to be exchanged or replaced.

I've got over 4 speakers running from my amplifier and it keeps cutting out

Most amplifiers will only support up to 4 speakers and you maybe overloading the amplifier if connecting more hence why it is cutting out

My speaker has two connections which one do i connect to

Either can be used as both are inputs, which ever you don't use can be used to connect from and to another speaker

Can i use a 400 watts amp, on speakers that are a total power of 4000max

You can use the amplifier however it will never run the speaker to its full potential and can also lead to damaging the amplifier, it is best to buy an amplifier suited to the speakers you are using

Everything is connected to my Amp correctly but I'm getting no sound

If the speaker has Binding posts or clips, make sure there is a clear connection between the metal section of the clip/post and the copper of the cable. sometimes the plastic parts can be slightly overhanging and prevent a connection to the speaker.

Can I connect my iphone or laptop to the speakers

It is not possible to connect these types of devices to a passive speaker, you will require an amplifier to power the speakers and it is the amplifier which you would connect your device to, alternatively there are active speakers and these have amplifiers already built in.

it says they have 2000 max but it does not seem that powerful

Sound is not actually measured by wattage, the decibel rating is key to volume as this is how sound is measured

Only one speaker has bass working, is this a fault or connection issue?

If you can hear high-end frequencies and no bass it will most likely not be a connection issue although these maybe a loss wire inside, if it is not this then there is a strong possibility that the driver is blown and will need to be replaced, it would be best to return the item for inspection

HiFi Speakers

One of the cones in my hifi speaker isn't working

Hifi speakers sometimes have dummy cones for aesthetics or to improve Bass resonance. This is common in tower-type speakers with several drivers.

Can i connect my phone directly to the speakers

you can not connect directly to the speakers and will need an amplifier to power the speakers and it is the amplifier which you would connect your device to

Subwoofers

The subwoofer is not working properly, it doesn't produce much Bass.

This is very likely caused through incorrect frequencies reaching the driver on the subwoofer. This is sometimes the case with cheaper subwoofer options because the crossover inside the sub allows higher frequencies than normal to pass through when playing some types of music. To solve you need to preamp the sound from your mixer (using a seperate output source to restrict the high and mid frequencies) or on passive subs using a crossover. By removing mid-high frequencies only Bass frequencies reach the sub, allowing you to go louder without distortion. Some sub options have adjustment on the rear to produce either low "sub" type frequencies or more "punchy" frequencies to suit different music.

Portable PA Speakers

Why does my battery not hold a charge?

Batteries are degradable and over time will lose the ability to charge up, or hold a charge. A battery left idle for too long without being used can degrade so much that it no longer works. However, the problem could be as simple as a cable being loose on the battery connection, and reconnecting the battery should solve the problem

Can i connect more microphones to the system

If you are referring to the supplied radio microphones then no as these will just interfere with each other and also cut out, there maybe additional microphone inputs on the back and you can use these to connect either a cabled microphone or another wireless radio microphone but this must be an alternative frequency to the existing system, only problem is the radio microphone would need to be plugged into main so would not work remotely with the speaker.

I can not get any sound from my speaker

Where are you connecting to on the speaker, most will have either a rca input or xlr input and you must make sure you are connecting to the input and not the output, others also have an input selector which and this needs to be selected to the correct input otherwise it will not produce any sound. ps make sure its switched on and turned up!!!

My microphone keeps cutting out

with a portable PA system with a wireless microphone you need to maintain a line of sight to the speaker, and within the distance limits for your specific system. Also check there are no issues with the Aerial on the PA speaker

I can not connect to the bluetooth

Make sure you have the correct mode selected first and are in range usually within 2-3m when first connecting, then go to your settings and search for devices and then pair

Speaker Packages

One of the speakers is not working

This could be caused by one of a few things. The first check is to see if it's the speaker itself, so swap the cables around in the back of each speaker. If the problem moves to the second speaker not working this will mean the issue is not with the speaker itself. Now swap the lead over from the amp/mixer entirely on the speaker which was working, does it still work? If not, then the cable to your speaker is faulty. If the same speaker still works, then check the cable coming from the audio source to the mixer/amplifier by swapping over the two plugs from this cable (sometimes red and white, so swap these around). If after doing this the problem shifts again to the other speaker, it means you definitely have a faulty cable from your input source. The speakers, Amp/mixer and speaker leads are all fine.

Installation Speakers

How many speakers can I connect to one amplifier?

Rule of thumb is that the total amount of wattage of all the speakers tappings added together should not be more than 90% of the amplifiers power

What does the different colours on the cables mean

Each colour will determine what power the speaker draws from the amplifier, it is usually indicated what wattage each is on the transformer

Can i convert my speaker to 100v line

There are transformers available which will enable you to convert them to 100v line

How do I connect the speakers to the amplifier?

You should connect speaker cable from the COM and 100v outputs on the amplifier, follow the COM cable into the COM connection on the speaker and the 100v wire into the desired wattage tapping on the speaker

What is the cut out dimensions

A template is usually supplied with the speaker, double check the packaging to see if you have missed this

Lights & Effects

Spot Lights & Uplighters

I cannot get the remote to work

First of all make sure the plastic tab has been pulled from the remote, also some lights will have an option on the light to turn the IR on and off, make sure this is on by going through the menu on the light until you get the option to turn IR on/off

My light is not powering up or coming on

Sometimes it may just be something as simple as a blown fuse. You can check this easily by removing it from the light (Usually found behind a small plastic compartment near the power input) and look for any signs of a blown fuse.

the power lead supplied is not long enough

extension cables are available and come in various lengths all of which can be purchased through our site

How do I get all the lights to change colour at the same time?

The lights will all need to be linked via DMX cables if you want them all to change at the same time

My light will not stay on a constant colour

You need to check if the light has static modes which allow the light to be set to individual colours, the manual will refer to whether it has if not you will need to either get a DMX controller or upgrade the lights

IR remote isnt working

Some fixtures need to have the IR switch on in the menu via the lcd display on the back of the unit

Moving Heads

My light is not powering up or coming on

Sometimes it may just be something as simple as a blown fuse. You can check this easily by removing it from the light (Usually found behind a small plastic compartment near the power input) and look for any signs of a blown fuse.

How do I get my lights to work in sync with each other

assuming they have DMX capabilities you can get the light to work in sync by connecting them together using the dmx connections, you will then need to program them as master and then slaves units so that they work as one.

can i get my lights to stay forward

You will need to check the dmx settings of the light to see if it has a forward facing mode, if not you can only control this by purchasing a dmx controller

The light is not light up

some lights have an on/off feature for the lamp, you will need to check the settings on the led panel to see if they have been switch off

LED Effects

My light is not powering up or coming on

Sometimes it may just be something as simple as a blown fuse. You can check this easily by removing it from the light (Usually found behind a small plastic compartment near the power input) and look for any signs of a blown fuse.

UV Black Lights

The blacklight isn't very bright.

Black Lights are designed to work best in very dark spaces, so any outside light will have a dramatic effect on the quality of the blacklight. to get a true "glow" effect, try switching off all other sources of light in the room. In larger spaces or venues with lots of people, you may need several black lights positioned in different spaces throughout the room

Lighting Controllers

Not controlling lights properly

Make sure the controller has enough DMX channels to control all DMX channels on the light

What is the right controller to buy

This will depend on how many lights you wish to control and the profiles which the lights have, it would be best to speak with a sale representative to make sure you get the best option

Lighting Cables

Can i use a normal XLR cable for DMX

It will work, but badly, and you will get errors in your DMX show.

Strobe Lights

How can the strobe be sound activated in DMX?

None of our strobe lights will have a sound active mode, the DMX channel on strobe lights will just alter how fast it flashes

Snow Machines

My snow machine has stopped working, no power

Sometimes it may just be something as simple as a blown fuse. You can check this easily by removing it from the machine (Usually found behind a small plastic compartment near the power input) and look for any signs of a blown fuse.

Fluid is just leaking everywhere and not coming out the front

This could be the connecting tube from the reservoir, it may have come adrift inside, this can be reattached internally however will require it to be opened, make sure the machine is unplugged if attempting this if however you are not happy to do so the contact our customer service department to exchange the machine.

Smoke Machines

I can hear something, but my smoke machine is not producing smoke. What is the problem?

After sitting for a while it's possible for fluid to slightly evaporate and congeal in the pipes going to the pump causing a blockage. To clean the machine you can use a cleaning fluid in the machine, or some distilled water to flush it through. Do not use tap water as this will cause a limescale build up and make the blockage worse.

Ive just recieved my smoke machine and it is not producing smoke

The main thing to check is that you have removed the transit cap and replaced with the cap that has the suction hose attached, when you first operate you will need to press and hold the button for approximately 1 minute to allow for fluid to be pumped and pulled through from the reservoir for the first time, there maybe a loud noise initially but this will stop once fluid has been pulled through and smoke is being emitted.

My smoke machine is not powering up

Sometimes it may just be something as simple as a blown fuse. You can check this easily by removing it from the smoke machine (Usually found behind a small plastic compartment near the power input) and look for any signs of a blown fuse. A spare is usually in the holder. Also check the fuse of the power cable which you are using to rule out this also being blown.

The smoke from my smoke machine is is coming from the sides instead of the front.

at the front of the smoke machine there is a nozzle with a small pipe inside that should stick out of the front slightly. Sometimes the pipe can be misaligned and end up inside the body of the machine. To solve this, disconnect the machine from the mains and use tweezers or pliers to graphic the pipe and reposition so it's slightly protruding the hole on the front. This will solve the problem

How do i clean my smoke machine

It is recommend that after every 30 hours of use that you flush the system through with a cleaning fluid, however if you are not intending to use it for any lengthy period of time then its best to do this after using it, leaving smoke fluid in the pipes can lead to the blocking of the smoke machine so it best to keep it well maintained for the best longevity.

Fluids

How do i know which fluid is right for my machine

There are many types of fluid available from standard fluid to high density, haze, low fog, CO2 effect and many more, some are also designed for higher powered machines, its best to check with your supplier for a suitable fluid for your machine

Can i get a fluid that does not set off fire alarms

Most smoke produced by smoke machines will set off fire alarms, haze machines are less likely but even these have the potential to set off smoke alarms

Can you get different coloured fluid

It is not possible to create coloured smoke fluid only white is achievable

Lasers

Why is my laser not turning on?

Most lasers will have a key and some also have an interlock, these are safety measures which most lasers will have and if these are not in place or switched on the laser will not work

Can i control the patterns

patterns can be controller but it depends on the light as some will only allow basic control such as sound to light modes and auto patterns, if the laser has dmx or ilda sockets then it will be controllable with an external dmx controller or software based programming.

One colour on my laser is working

in cold conditions Laser diodes do not perform to well, and some colours won't work altogether. To solve, leave the laser unplugged in a warmer environment for 30 minutes prior to use. If some colours still don't work it may be a faulty Diode

I've turned the key on but there is no power to the laser it is not coming on

Sometimes it may just be something as simple as a blown fuse. You can check this easily by removing it from the laser (Usually found behind a small plastic compartment near the power input) and look for any signs of a blown fuse.

Mirror Balls

Why do large mirror balls have two hanging hooks?

The centre hook is for securing to the motor mount and the second off centre hook is for using a safety chain

Home Audio

Record Players

Plugged my record player into 'line in' on my amp but i cant hear it ?

Unless stated, most record players output a very low signal which requires either the amplifier to have a dedicated 'phono' input, or you will need to use a separate phono/turntable preamp. This can be a stand alone phono preamp box, or you can use a DJ mixer which has phono/turntable inputs. This boosts the signal so it can then be connected to a line level input

Bluetooth Speakers

I can not connect to the bluetooth

Make sure you have the correct mode selected first and are in range usually within 2-3m when first connecting, then go to your settings and search for devices and then pair

My speaker is not powering up, the light is not coming on

Check to see if the fuse has blown, this can usually be found just under the IEC input

Stereo Systems

Why does my music keep cutting out with nothing interfering the bluetooth connection?

Bluetooth can be unreliable at the best of times, try connecting your device with a wire to see if this solves the cutting out issue then you will know for definite whether it is the bluetooth causing the issue.

MP3 & CD Players

One side of my CD player is not reading discs

Double check the disc works in the other side of the CD player. If it does it's most likely a fault, but if it doesn't then try a different CD with a different format. Some file types do not work in CD players.

The cd plays continuously and does not stop at each track

Most cd players but not all will have a single or continuous button and this is most likely set to continuous so will need to be selected to single so that it will stop after each track

One side of my CD player reads discs but I don't hear any sound

The first thing to check is that the correct channel on your mixer is selected. Many DJixers have switched to switch from line-CD and if this is the wrong side you won't hear the CD. If CD is selected, then double check your connections to the speakers. If all is properly connected, it's likely a faulty output on the CD player.

One side is not opening

Check to see if the player has two data cables at the back, most will have to one for each side and it could just be a faulty cable so take the cable from the side which is working and swap it over, if it still persists then it will need to be returned and inspected.

Amplifiers

100 Volt Amplifiers

What connections do I use to connect my speakers to the amplifier

You should connect the speakers to the COM and 100v outputs, follow the COM cable into the COM connection on the speaker and the 100v wire into the desired wattage tapping on the speaker

Im connecting everything correctly and im not getting any sound

The amplifier may have an input selector, made sure this is selected to the input which is being used and the corresponding volume dial for that input is being turned up

How do i get multiple zones from a single output amplifier

You will need to purchase volume attenuators which can be situated in each room to control the volume within

Do i wire all of my speakers directly to the amplifier

Usually you would daisy chain the speakers from one to another but you can wire them all directly to the amplifier, it's a lot easier to daisy chain and uses less cabling.

Can I have different zones

If your amplifier has zonal capabilities you can have different zones however if not you still can but would require additional product

Karaoke Amplifiers

One channel on the amplifier is not working.

This could be a cable problem. To rule this out, swap over the two speaker cables. If the problem shifts to the opposite channel then you have a faulty speaker lead. If it remains the same, then you need to check your input cable. to do this, swap around the two inputs (sometimes red/white, swap these so they are red-white and white-red). Does the problem shift channels? if so then the source cable is faulty. If not, then you most likely have a channel down on the amplifier.

The usb is not playing any tracks

This could be 1 of two things, either you have other files other than MP3 on the USB which is causing it not to read or you have not selected the correct mode on the amplifier, if the amplifier has several inputs then it will also have a mode select and you need to make sure the correct input mode is selected. Also the USB will need to be a memory stick, not a lead, the sound will not travel through a USB lead.

PA Amplifiers

Why is one channel on my amplifier not working?

This could be a fault with the amplifier having one channel down, however this is more commonly caused by cabling. You have a stereo input on the amp with two cables coming in from your input source. If one side of the amp is working and one side is not, try swapping the inputs around. Does the problem move to the other channel on the amp? If so, then you have a faulty cable which will need replacing.

My amplifier is not powering up, the light is not coming on

Sometimes it may just be something as simple as a blown fuse. You can check this easily by removing it from the amplifier (Usually found behind a small plastic compartment near the power input) and look for any signs of a blown fuse.

The amplifier keeps overheating

Routine maintenance is essential as amplifiers do suck in a lot of air through the fans which will leave deposits inside the amplifier and over time this built up can cause the amplifier to overheat due to the dust deposits inside the amp, compressed air is the best thing to use and will require the amplifier to be opened and the dust blown out PS make sure it's not plugged in when attempting this. If this does not improve the performance then it will need to be inspected by an engineer.

My amplifier is in protect mode is there anything i can do to fix this

There are no resets for this, the amplifier will need to be returned and inspected

Recently the fan has become really noisy

Routine maintenance is essential as amplifiers do suck in a lot of air through the fans which will leave deposits inside the amplifier and also on the fans housing and over time this built up can cause the fan to catch as it goes round and cause excessive noise, compressed air is the best thing to use and will require the amplifier to be opened and the dust blown out, you may also need to clean the fan, earbuds are really good to use dipping them in nail varnish remover to clean in and around the housing. PS make sure it's not plugged in when attempting this

DJ Equipment

Mixers

Can I connect passive speakers to a mixer?

Only if it is a powered mixer, this means it will have amplified outputs, otherwise you will require an external amplifier to power the speakers

I can't get the bluetooth to work

Make sure you have the correct mode selected first and are in range usually within 2-3m when first connecting, then go to your settings and search for devices and then pair

When using the crossfader the sound keeps cutting in and out

This maybe a dirty fader causing this depending on which type is fitted, if it is an optical fader then there is an internal fault and it will need to be returned and fixed however if it is a carbon fader then the likelihood is that it is just a build up of carbon deposits and dust so when you pass the fader over it is cuts in and out, a basic switch cleaning lubricant will resolve this by simply squirting a small amount in each end and working the fader back and forth several times and it should clear.

Why am I getting really distorted sound?

you may have selected the wrong input, mixers have phono and line inputs others also have switches which selected from phono and line, if you are connecting a laptop, ipad or iphone to a phono input instead of a line input this will cause it to sound poor, phono is for turntables only as these require additional processing, always use line inputs for these types of devices

My mixer is not turning on

Sometimes it may just be something as simple as a blown fuse. You can check this easily by removing it from the mixer (Usually found behind a small plastic compartment near the power input) and look for any signs of a blown fuse.

DJ Controllers

The controller is not syncing with what is on screen

Customer may need to download relevant drivers for the controller to sync to their software

Do i need to have a laptop to use a controller ?

All the controllers we stock are simply software interfaces, they give you the buttons to control your music software that would not be practical using just a keyboard and mouse. A mac / pc / or laptop is required for the controller to operate

Can i plug speakers into my controller ?

Yes but only if they are active speakers. A controller is a mixer and preamp, but not an amplifier, so its line output will require being amplified, either by going into a set of active speakers or by using an amplifier and passive speakers.

DJ Amplifiers

One channel on the amplifier is not working.

This could be a cable problem. To rule this out, swap over the two speaker cables. If the problem shifts to the opposite channel then you have a faulty speaker lead. If it remains the same, then you need to check your input cable. to do this, swap around the two inputs (sometimes red/white, swap these so they are red-white and white-red). Does the problem shift channels? if so then the source cable is faulty. If not, then you most likely have a channel down on the amplifier.

The amplifier keeps blowing fuses

This will need to be returned and inspected, there is nothing we would advise checking at this stage

My amplifier is in protect mode is there anything i can do to fix this

There are no resets for this, the amplifier will need to be returned and inspected

Is USB capable of playing wave files

This will all depend on the particular amplifier, it should state in the manual which files the USB player can play

Microphones

Wired Microphones

Condenser microphone not working?

Mixer/desk must have phantom power (48 volts)

Is the mic input balanced or unbalanced ?

Most budget equipment uses an unbalanced mic input which will be a standard mono 1/4" (6.35mm) jack socket. Better quality active speakers, mixers and PA desks will have balanced inputs which use a 3 pin XLR.

What is the difference between directional and omnidirectional microphones

Directional (cardioid) microphones give you good pick up to the front of the microphone whereas omnidirectional picks up equally around the microphone

Wireless Microphones

The Microphone distorts when I'm using it.

Wireless microphones have several signal controls on them before reaching the mixer and it's a good idea to check these are not too high. One gain is on the microphone itself (usually under the battery tab, but sometimes under the top grill). The second gain is on the receiver itself. Try reducing both of these slightly and use the mixer to control the volume instead. The result should be a clearer sound.

What's the difference between VHF & UHF

UHF(ultra high frequency) signals operate at the higher end of the radio frequency spectrum, they can easily penetrate metal and concrete structures so are better suited in built up areas like towns and cities, VHF (very high frequency) signals occupy the lower end of the radio signal so actually travel further than UHF however do not penetrate metal or concrete structures very well so not suited to built up areas.

I keep getting interference and other voices coming through the speakers when using it

Wireless microphones operated on set frequencies and some have selectable frequencies or additional channels, if it is the later then simply select another channel however if it is a set frequency then there is nothing you can do to stop this, if you are in the same venue regularly then we would advise changing your microphone

Instruments

Drum Kits

Im getting no sound from the drum kit

Double check you have all the cables correctly connected to the brain and that it is switched on, it should work straight away as the volume should already be adjusted to a medium setting, this can be adjusted once up and running

Other

Outdoor Lighting

What is an IP rating

IP (or "ingress protection") ratings are used to define levels of sealing of electrical products against intrusion from foreign bodies the likes of moisture water and dust/dirt

Staging

Does it come with legs?

Unless advertised, all stage decks will be sold without legs

What clamps connect the decks together?

SCD01 for the SCA11 Stage Decks and Clamping Clamps for the Panther Stage Decks
