Floor standing speakers, also known as tower speakers have multiple drivers built into their cabinet and this gives them a fuller sound compared to models like bookshelf speakers, as an example. Having several woofers means that they will be able to produce bass frequencies easier than speakers that only have one woofer built-in, which makes them great to use in a home cinema system.

Several of our floor speakers have a 3-way design which means that there are separate speaker drivers that handle different frequencies. For example, one (or more) drivers will only produce lower bass frequencies, another driver will handle all of the mid frequencies and the tweeter driver will handle all of the higher frequencies. The 3-way design means that you will be able to hear every aspect of an audio mix clearly, great to use with music as you might hear certain aspects of a song that you wouldn't usually hear.

These speakers are usually around 1 metre in height, so it is important to consider the amount of space you have available in the room you intend to use them in before choosing a set. They are usually used with a larger TV but can be used effectively with any sized entertainment system as long as you have the space available. By having them on the floor, you can be sure to not only hear the wide frequency range but also feel it on the floor, making for a more immersive experience when listening to music or watching TV.

What makes floor standing speakers good?

Floor speakers are great to use in a larger room like a living room with your TV, and this is mostly due to their rich and vast frequency range. The several woofer drivers that they feature are guaranteed to fill a room nicely without having to push the speakers too hard. They also have a high sensitivity, meaning that they don't need a large amount of wattage to achieve a high volume, making them perfect to use with a standard HiFi amplifier.

The 3-way design of our floor standing tower speakers makes them a great choice for music and home cinema purposes. Generally, speakers have a 2-way design, which means that one driver will be producing the bass and mid frequencies while the tweeter produces the high frequencies. The 3-way design of floor speakers means that the frequencies are spread out between three different drivers, which gives the speakers an overall rounded sound and ensures you are hearing every aspect of an audio mix clearly.

With floor standing speakers, you don't need to mount them onto stands to improve how they sound. With smaller speakers, it is common that they will sound best when mounted onto stands due to their design, however, with floor-standing speakers, this isn't necessary. The tweeter component of any speaker should usually be around ear-level with the listener for the best audio. Our tower speakers are around 1 metre in height, so when you're sitting down, they will be at the optimum height already without any adjustments needed.

Floor standing speakers are diverse in how they can be used. They are great for home cinema purposes but provide fantastic audio for music as well thanks to their design.

Do I need a subwoofer with floor standing speakers?

Having a subwoofer with any speaker will improve the overall sound and experience for the listener. Some speakers will be noticeably better with a subwoofer than others, for example, bookshelf speakers due to their smaller size. Floor speakers already have a respectable bass output, but to achieve the extra sub-level bass that they simply cannot produce, a subwoofer is a great addition to your home audio system.

Due to the fact that floor speakers already have a respectable bass output, the setup of a subwoofer is important. Our HiFi subwoofers offer crossover frequency control, and this allows you to adjust the frequency range that the sub reproduces. When using a subwoofer with floor speakers, it is ideal to set it to reproduce frequencies as low as possible, otherwise, you won't notice too much of a difference in the overall sound.

With a floor standing speaker setup, you will usually have them to the left and right of the TV facing inwards towards the listening area. The addition of a subwoofer is a great choice, and a lot of people ask where is best to position it. The position of the subwoofer depends on the room you are using it in; it is best to try out a few different positions to see what works best in your room.

What floor standing speakers should I buy?

The speakers that you go for will depend on the room you intend to use them in and also the amplifier you will be pairing them with. Speakers with larger drivers will be best for larger rooms as they offer better sound dispersion and higher volume levels. If you are only intending to use them in a small room then you won't need anything extremely powerful to fill the room effectively.

All of our tower speakers are passive, which means they will need to be paired with a suitable power amplifier. The amplifier that you use with the speakers should match the wattage rating and impedance load of the speakers, or ideally, be higher. This ensures that the speakers are working at their full potential without any worry of unnecessary damage occurring.
