There are three types of lights within this category that can all be used for a stage wash lighting effect. These include wireless uplighters, LED PAR cans and LED light bars. When spread out and positioned correctly on a stand or fixture, these lights will create a wall of constant light rather than a pattern like you would see with a LED effects light.

The majority of our LED wall washer lights have DMX functionality, allowing you to connect them to a lighting rig and use them in unison with other lighting fixtures. For larger stage productions where you will be using multiple wash lights to achieve the wall of light effect, DMX is an important feature. This is because you have the ability to make each light change colour or fade in/out at the same time, making for a more professional looking light show.

While the majority of our wash lights are suitable for large stages, they are also great for smaller rooms or stages. Wash lights are usually used for weddings or marquee events, as they can perfectly light up walls around the room, providing a polished and smart-looking effect.

A common feature of our wash lights is sound-to-light activation whereby the light can change colour whenever the built-in microphone picks up any sound. For karaoke nights or gigs where there is loud music, this provides a satisfying effect as the light will interact with the sounds.

How Do I Choose A Wash Light?

There are many different factors to consider when looking for LED wash lights. One of the main ones is colour possibilities. If you only need a select few colours achievable on the lights then you won't need to go for the higher-end products in this range. If, however, you will need to achieve many different colours for different events, you'll need a unit that offers more than the standard RGB colour mixing.

Another factor to consider when purchasing wall washer lights is the projection that each unit offers. If you only need to light up small wall and floor surfaces then you won't need an overly powerful large unit, a smaller light with lower wattage LEDs would suffice.

Of course, budget is an important aspect to think about when choosing LED wall washer lights. For example, if you need to light up an entire marquee or wedding venue, you'll need several fixtures to achieve the best effect and cover all surfaces of the venue. This can get expensive, but we offer many different wash lights that are low in cost while still offering bright and crisp displays of colour.

If you are going to be using LED washers in a variety of locations and events, it may be wise to choose wireless uplighters with integrated rechargeable batteries. Mains power sockets may not always be available to you, however, if you are planning on using the lights in one venue constantly then this may not be a factor that needs consideration.

We also offer many LED wash lights that are weatherproof, giving you the ability to use them outdoors without the worry of damage. With all of these factors in mind, it will be much easier to make a decision that works best for your intended use.

DMX LED Wall Washers

Many of the uplighting wall washers in our range feature DMX connections. These give you the ability to use them with a DMX setup, whether it is big or small, providing full control over the light fixtures and the effects they are producing. This includes colour, fade, strobe and jump at any given time you like.

By using DMX with LED wall washers, you have the ability to control all of them at once to perform the same effects and colours. This is particularly great for weddings, as it means that all of the light fixtures will be synchronised so that the room is lit up in the same colour at all times.

DMX control is also great for stage lighting, as you can program your own 'Show' whereby the light fixtures will produce certain custom effects and colours at a chosen time. In stage performances, this keeps the stage wash lighting units in time with the performance, and it also helps convey the theme of a performance easily.

The DMX connections on many of our LED wall washers also provide the ability for the lights to be operated in master/slave mode. This means that you don't need to use external DMX equipment like controllers or software on a PC, as more than one light simply links up using a DMX cable and the master/slave mode is choosable in the menu on the lights themselves.

Master/slave synchronisation means that you can set one fixture to one colour or show and then connect a second 'slave' unit so that it is performing the same effect, colour or show at the same time, providing a professional-looking synchronised light display.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a wash light?

A wash light is a type of lighting fixture designed to bathe a space or surface in a spread of light, often used to cover stages, walls, or specific areas with uniform, diffused light. They can produce a wide range of colours and are frequently used in theatrical productions, concerts, and events to set an atmosphere. Wash lights are essential in creating background lighting, highlighting scenery, or providing general illumination across a large area.

Do wash lights use LEDs?

Yes, many modern wash lights use LEDs due to their energy efficiency, long lifespan, and ability to produce a wide range of colours. LED wash lights offer flexibility in lighting design, enabling precise control over intensity and colour mixing. This makes them suitable for various applications, from stage and theatrical lighting to architectural and event lighting, where creating ambience and mood is crucial.

Are wash lights and beam lights the same?

No, wash lights and beam lights are not the same. Wash lights are designed to provide broad, diffused illumination over a large area, creating uniform lighting or colour across a space. They are ideal for setting the mood or atmosphere. Beam lights, in contrast, produce a tight, focused beam of light, often with higher intensity, aimed at creating dramatic effects or highlighting specific areas or objects.

Do wash lights use DMX?

Yes, many wash lights are designed to be controlled via DMX (Digital Multiplexing), a standard protocol used in lighting technology. This allows for precise control over their functions, including colour mixing, intensity, and sometimes beam shape or direction. DMX control enables integration into complex lighting schemes and synchronisation with other lighting effects, making it essential for professional lighting setups in concerts, theatre productions, and other events where dynamic, customisable lighting is required.

What types of wash lights are there?

Wash lights come in various types, each suited to different applications and settings. LED wash lights are popular for their energy efficiency and colour versatility. Moving head wash lights offer dynamic positioning and coverage, ideal for stage and event lighting. PAR lights provide a wide, soft-edged light, commonly used for concerts and theatre. Fresnel lights, with their adjustable beam width, are used in both stage productions and film for a soft, diffused light. Each type offers unique benefits, from colour mixing to movement, to suit specific lighting needs.

Are wash lights different to spot lights?

Yes, wash lights and spotlights serve different purposes in lighting design. Wash lights are used to cover large areas with a broad, diffused light, creating a uniform illumination or colour across a space. They're ideal for setting moods or lighting backgrounds.

Spotlights, on the other hand, emit a focused beam of light, designed to highlight specific objects, performers, or areas. They provide a concentrated light source that can be controlled for intensity and often, direction, making them suitable for drawing attention to specific points on a stage or venue

Which colours can wash lights make?

Wash lights, especially those using LED technology, can produce a broad spectrum of colours by mixing primary colours (red, green, blue) and often additional hues (such as white or amber) to achieve an extensive palette. This capability allows for the creation of virtually any colour, from soft pastels to vibrant, saturated hues, enabling designers to set the desired mood or match specific themes at events, theatres, and concerts.

Where are wash lights used?

Wash lights are versatile and used across various settings, including theatre productions for broad illumination, concerts to enhance the atmosphere with colour, corporate events for ambient lighting, architectural applications to highlight buildings or landscapes, and nightclubs or parties for dynamic, mood-setting backgrounds.

What is a stage wash light?

A stage wash light is a lighting fixture used in theatrical and performance settings to evenly illuminate large sections of the stage with diffused light. It's designed to bathe the area in light, ensuring that performers and set pieces are clearly visible without harsh shadows or bright spots. These lights can be adjusted in colour and intensity, often via DMX control, to create the desired atmosphere and complement the theme of the performance.

Are wash lights easy to set up?

The ease of setting up wash lights varies depending on the type and complexity of the light. Basic wash lights can be relatively straightforward to install and configure, especially for those with some experience in stage or event lighting. Models with plug-and-play functionality or simple manual controls are particularly user-friendly. However, more advanced wash lights that offer features like DMX control, colour mixing, or moving heads may require more knowledge to fully exploit their capabilities.
