High fidelity, or HiFi speakers, are given this name due to their exceptional audio reproduction. They are designed to closely replicate the original signal source of an audio file, so when using them you are hearing the music or sound mix as the sound engineer intended it to be.

Within our range of HiFi loudspeakers, you will find many different size and power options. Bookshelf speakers are the most compact units that we have to offer, and these are great for casual listening purposes. On the other hand, we have much larger speakers such as floor standing units. These are ideal to use in a TV/Entertainment setup but are also great for music playback.

Any of our HiFi stereo speakers are a great addition to your home, but if you want that extra sub-bass that you won't be able to hear with standard full-range speakers, it's a great choice to use your speaker system with a HiFi subwoofer. Adding a subwoofer into your setup provides a wider frequency range, and greatly improves the overall listening experience for the user for maximum immersion.

Which HiFi speakers are best?

The HiFi speakers that you choose will depend entirely on your intended use and the room they will be used in. For smaller systems in small rooms, it would be best to go for one of our bookshelf speaker sets. They are compact in design and fit into tighter spaces if you don't have a lot of room for larger speakers. These are best to use with equipment like CD or Vinyl players but can also be used effectively with a PC or TV for gaming and films.

For larger rooms, floor standing speakers are a great choice. They have multiple woofer drivers, providing a rich and high bass output that will fill the largest of rooms. Whether you will be using them for music or entertainment purposes, floor-standing speakers give you maximum immersion and offer a substantial upgrade when compared to the built-in speakers in your TV.

If you are after a high-quality sound system to use in your living room for films, gaming and TV, our surround sound speakers are an ideal choice. Each speaker in these sets is placed around the listening space to give you enhanced immersion in the film or game that you are playing.

Adding a HiFi subwoofer into any of these speaker options is great if you want that extra, rich bass that you wouldn't usually hear with a full range speaker. Whether you are using the speakers for entertainment or music purposes, a subwoofer will give the audio an extra boost and drive that is guaranteed to make a difference and impress anyone.

Does HiFi speaker size affect the overall sound?

The size of a speaker does affect the sound in that the smaller the woofer driver, generally the lower the bass output will be. Bookshelf speakers are powerful for their size, but won't provide the lower bass frequencies that you would find with a larger speaker like floor standing units.

There is no 'better' speaker than another; each speaker set is great in its own right and can be used better for different purposes. The smaller range of speakers that we offer are great for casual background music purposes and ideal to pair with an audio system such as a CD player. The larger speakers are also great for music purposes if you want a more up-front sound which is ideal for small gatherings and use with a TV system.

With surround sound speaker systems, there are varying sizes of speakers in each kit. The larger speakers will be the main left and right stereo units and are larger because they provide the more prominent sounds in an audio mix. The surrounding speakers that are placed behind the listener are usually smaller, and this is because they are mostly used to reproduce ambient background sounds. When used as a whole kit, varying sized speakers provide a fantastic frequency range for maximum effect.

Active and passive HiFi loudspeakers

There are two main types of HiFi speakers in terms of power; active and passive. Active speakers have built-in amplifiers meaning that they can plug directly into mains power. Passive speakers do not have a built-in amplifier, so need to be used with an external amplifier unit for power.

It is a very common debate whether active or passive speakers are better, however, there isn't really a correct answer as it all comes down to preference. With active speakers, the built-in amplifier is designed to work effectively with the speaker components within the cabinet, which is great as you can be sure that the speakers are working to the extent they are capable.

Passive HiFi speakers are a bit different, as it is easy to pair them with an amplifier that isn't quite good enough for them, resulting in poorer performance. It is important to match passive HiFi loudspeakers with a suitable amplifier that is capable of powering them. When using passive speakers, you have the option to upgrade your amplifier to something more powerful further down the line, giving you an easy way to achieve better audio from the same speakers.

If you have any questions about HiFi speakers or need advice on which ones you should get, please do not hesitate to contact us as we will be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a HiFi speaker?

HiFi (high fidelity) speakers are designed to produce a high-quality audio output. They provide a full-range frequency response and are designed to replicate the original sound as closely as possible. HiFi speakers are therefore perfect for listening to music and home entertainment. We offer a range of high-quality HiFi speakers in different sizes and power options to suit all homes.

Are HiFi speakers worth it?

Yes, if you are looking for the highest quality audio performance, then Hi-Fi speakers are definitely worth it. They are designed to produce an exceptional audio output, and to replicate the original sound. They typically include a two-way or three-way speaker system to reproduce a full frequency range. They are perfect for listening to music, and home entertainment.

What is the difference between active and passive HiFi speakers?

The key difference between active and passive HiFi speakers is that active speakers include an in-built amplifier. This means they can be plugged directly into the mains, and they are ready for use. In comparison, passive speakers do not have an amplifier. Therefore, they will need to be connected to a suitable external amplifier to receive power.

What is the difference between HiFi and stereo speakers?

The terms HiFi and stereo speakers are used interchangeably, however, there are subtle differences. A stereo speaker system splits sound between two speakers to produce a multidirectional audio effect. Whereas, a HiFi system aims to reproduce sound as close as possible to its original form. Hi-Fi systems will always include a stereo output, however, not all stereo systems will be Hi-Fi systems.

What types of HiFi systems are available?

There are many types of HiFi systems to suit every home, including bookshelf, floor standing and surround sound systems. Bookshelf speakers are compact, ideal for background music and smaller rooms. While floor standing systems provide more power, and are ideal for larger rooms, suiting TV setups and music playback. Surround sound systems include multiple speakers and are great for providing an immersive experience ideal for TV and gaming. There are also Hifi subwoofers which enhance the overall listening experience, by focusing on low frequencies.

Do people still use Hi-Fi?

Yes, Hi-Fi speakers are still popularly used. Hi-Fi speakers simply refer to speakers that produce a full-range frequency response and reproduce sound as close as possible to the original audio. However, the term ‘HiFi’ is used less nowadays when describing speakers, and people refer more to stereo systems which are very similar.

What are the best HiFi speakers?

The best HiFi speakers will vary depending on your planned usage. Various size speakers are available, with larger speakers providing more power and producing lower bass frequencies. This suits larger spaces and home entertainment needs. While smaller bookshelf speakers are better for background music purposes and use in smaller rooms. If you are looking for an immersive audio experience while gaming and watching TV a surround system with multiple speakers may be best.

Do HiFi speakers need an amplifier?

The design of the HiFi speakers will determine whether an external amplifier is needed. If the HiFi speakers have an active design then a separate amplifier is not needed, as the speakers include an integrated amplifier. However, if the speakers have a passive design, then a suitable external amplifier will be needed to power the speakers. This should match the speakers in terms of power and impedance.
