Many of our smart sound systems have separate smart amplifiers. These are standalone units that you can connect the passive speakers to using speaker cable. The amplifier is WiFi-enabled, so with the use of an app on your smart device, you can stream music from your favourite streaming services wirelessly.

Also included in our smart audio systems are active/passive ceiling speaker and wall-mounted speaker sets. These are similar to the amplifiers, but you can plug the active unit from each set directly into mains power and then connect the corresponding passive speaker to it with included speaker cable. They are WiFi-enabled, so you can set up each set and then connect to all of them at the same time through the smart app on your phone.

With smart sound systems like these, you can achieve multi-room audio by connecting to your home WiFi network. By using the respective app on your phone, you can select each set of speakers that are installed in different rooms, and rename them to each room on the app. This is extremely user-friendly and means you can distinguish each room differently for ease of use.

Some of the speakers included in our kits are moisture-resistant, so you can install them in rooms such as bathrooms, kitchens or balconies. Their moisture-resistant design means that they cannot be completely submerged in water, but can withstand splashing, rain, and general moisture in the room, which makes them perfect for bathroom or garden installations.

How smart home sound systems work

Smart home sound systems allow you to enjoy high-quality audio throughout your home with seamless control from a central point. These systems typically consist of wireless speakers or amplifiers that are connected to your home network, allowing you to stream music, podcasts, or other audio content from various sources such as online streaming services, local music libraries, or connected devices.

The first step in setting up a smart speaker system is to choose the type of speakers or amplifiers that suit your needs. There are various options available, including wireless speakers, in-ceiling or on-wall speakers, or amplifiers that can be connected to existing speakers. These units are typically equipped with built-in WiFi connectivity, which allows them to connect to your home network and communicate with other devices.

Once you have selected the speakers or amplifiers, you'll need to connect them to your home network. This can typically be done through a companion app, which allows you to connect and configure the speakers or amplifiers to your network. Once connected, you can use the app to control the audio content, volume, and other settings for each speaker or group of speakers in different rooms of your home.

Smart home sound systems often offer advanced features such as multi-room audio synchronisation, where you can play the same audio content in multiple rooms simultaneously, or create different audio zones with individual volume controls for each room. Some systems also offer voice control capabilities, allowing you to control the audio content and settings using voice commands through compatible smart speakers or virtual assistants. Additionally, many multi room audio systems are compatible with popular streaming services, giving you access to a wide range of audio content directly from your smart devices or the sound system app.

Different types of speakers in smart systems

There are a variety of speakers included in these smart speaker systems, ranging from in-ceiling units to on-wall weatherproof speakers. Each style of speaker is designed to be used effectively in different areas of your home to ensure the best possible sound quality while fitting in seamlessly with any room or area.

In-ceiling speakers are perhaps the most common form of speaker in installed systems, as they are versatile, provide high-quality sound, and are discreet when mounted in the ceiling. Ceiling speakers are great for casual listening in any room, such as kitchens, living rooms, and home offices. Their installed design helps them blend in nicely with a variety of interior home designs, and the coaxial 2-way driver layout that many ceiling speakers have ensures a wide frequency range.

On-wall speakers are another common type of speaker used in smart audio systems. They come with adjustable mounting brackets that enable installation on various wall surfaces. Compared to ceiling speakers, wall speakers are capable of louder volume levels, as well as wider frequency ranges. This makes them ideal for larger spaces such as dining rooms, as well as outdoor patio and garden areas.

Weather and moisture-resistant speakers are commonly found in these smart sound systems, which allows for installation in humid areas like bathrooms or outdoor patios. Whatever the weather conditions, and wherever you want to install a sound system, our wide variety of packages cater to different requirements, making them suitable for a huge range of applications.

Multi room audio systems

Smart audio setups can be expanded to create multi room audio systems, making them easily adaptable to varying sound requirements in a home environment. Once the amplifier, speaker, or streamer (depending on the type of system) has been connected to your home WiFi network, you can connect multiple other speakers, amplifiers, or streamers to the network for it to be recognised as one system.

Each amplifier in a multi room system is recognised as one ‘zone’ on the corresponding smart app, where you can then rename each amplifier to know exactly which room it is in. The result is a system that can be controlled from a smart device on the same network from any room in the house, making these systems much more versatile and convenient than wireless Bluetooth systems.

That being said, many of the multi room systems in this category also provide Bluetooth functionality, which allows for simpler single-room streaming. An advantage that Bluetooth has over WiFi is that you can use any app or website of your choice on your device, leaving you completely unrestricted in terms of what audio you want to listen to.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a smart audio system?

A smart audio system is an all-in-one sound solution that usually consists of speakers and amplifiers. They work by connecting to a WiFi network, and are capable of being expanded into multi-room systems for total control from one or more smart devices.

Is smart audio really necessary?

Smart audio is not necessarily essential, but it can provide added convenience and functionality for those who want voice-activated control of their audio systems or integration with other smart home devices. Smart speakers allow for hands-free control of audio playback and access to a wider range of streaming services and podcasts, without the need for a separate audio source device.

They can also be integrated with other smart home devices, such as lighting or thermostats, to provide a more streamlined and connected home experience. However, traditional audio systems may still be a viable and cost-effective option for those who prioritize sound quality over smart features.

Does a smart sound system need Wi-Fi?

Yes, a smart sound system typically requires a Wi-Fi connection in order to access streaming services, control features via voice commands, and receive software updates. Without a Wi-Fi connection, the smart features of the system would not be able to function properly. Some smart sound systems may also have the option to connect to a wired Ethernet network, but Wi-Fi is generally the more convenient and popular option for home use.

How can I play music throughout the house?

You can play music throughout your house using a smart sound system in a number of ways. One popular method is to set up a multi-room audio system that allows you to stream music to multiple speakers in different rooms at the same time. This can typically be done using a smartphone app, with each amplifier or speaker in the system being connected to your home network.

How do I choose a smart speaker system?

When choosing a smart speaker system, consider your budget, the size of your space, and the features you want. Look for speakers that offer voice control, multi-room audio, and compatibility with your favorite streaming services. Also, consider the design and aesthetics of the speakers to ensure they fit your home's style.

What is the difference between a smart speaker and a Bluetooth speaker?

A smart speaker and a Bluetooth speaker differ in their functionality and capabilities. A Bluetooth speaker is a wireless device that can connect to a smartphone, tablet, or computer via Bluetooth technology to stream audio content. It typically relies on the audio source device for content selection and playback controls.

On the other hand, a smart speaker integrates with a virtual assistant to provide voice-activated control of audio playback, as well as other smart home functions. Smart speakers can also access streaming music services and podcasts directly, without the need for a separate audio source device.

What are the benefits of smart audio systems?

Smart audio systems offer several benefits, including hands-free control via voice commands, access to a wider range of streaming services and podcasts, and integration with other smart home devices. With voice-activated control, users can adjust volume, skip tracks, or pause playback without having to physically interact with the device. Additionally, smart audio systems can learn user preferences and make personalised recommendations for music and other content.

Can you use a smart sound system without a phone?

Yes, it is possible to use a smart sound system without a phone, although some features may be limited or inaccessible without a smartphone or tablet. Smart sound systems can typically be controlled via voice commands, physical buttons on the device, or a dedicated remote control. However, some initial setup and configuration may require the use of a smartphone app. Additionally, certain features such as personalized recommendations or integration with other smart home devices may be more easily accessed through a mobile app.

Are smart ceiling or wall speakers better?

Smart ceiling and wall speakers both have their pros and cons, and which one is better ultimately depends on personal preference and the specific needs of the user.

Ceiling speakers are a great option for those who want a seamless and discreet audio experience as they can be installed in the ceiling and become practically invisible.

Wall speakers, on the other hand, are a better option for those who want more flexibility in terms of positioning and installation. They can be installed at any height on the wall, which can be particularly useful for home theaters or music listening rooms. Wall speakers can also be more powerful than ceiling speakers due to their larger size, which can be beneficial for those who want a louder audio experience.

What is the best smart sound system?

There are many smart sound systems available, each of which cater towards different needs and space requirements. For example, there are many in-depth multi-room systems that are fantastic for full-home audio coverage, as well as intricate single-room smart systems with voice activation and in-depth features. The best smart audio system will massively depend on your specific needs and preferences.
